Power Supply type ALICE/LHCb

Carlos gave a presentation on "Analysis of the possibility of using of a ALICE/LHCb type power converter in TT2A target test". Additional comments: Alice and LHCb currently installed their two power supllies in point 2 and 8. These power supllies can easily be run at 10 % current surplus from a nominal 6.5kA to 7.2kA. Sufficient for TT2A target test. They use "air forced" cooling. The power supply is connected with two lines to ONE 18kV-cell (3-phase). They are a unipolar system, but upon removal of the diodes, the voltage can be reversed to reduce power deposition in the magnet. There is one spare transformer at CERN (available for both Alice and KLHCB, we could borrow it, if we purchase the other items). Any power source (Alice, batteries) would be placed in the ISR tunnel and connected to TT2A via the supply gallery.

It may be possible to temporarily use the 18kV cells in building 287, as this is the preferred solution. An available cell in building 193 is another possible solution.

John Pedersen needs to be contacted to figure out the costs to install the cable lines from the 18 kV cells to TT2A?

How much is man-month worth at CERN?

BATTERY BANKS:

~600 batteries, 100 US-$ each
Two types currently investigated:
- liquid acid INTERSTATE (see old minutes)
- gel acid closed battery (http://www.1st-optima-batteries.com/marine_battery.asp ,new AGM technology = Absorbed Glass Mat. E.g. Optima D31M. Needs 50 kW power supply for charging.

The list shows only costs, but does not include aspects of reselling and waste management.

L.Leistam should be urgently contacted to figure out the commissioning schedule of ALICE.

G.Grawer added to the contact list for power issues.
